About the Role

As a Site Reliability Engineering Intern at Okta, you will be part of a distributed team focused on ensuring the performance, reliability, and scalability of critical production systems. This role offers real-world exposure to cloud infrastructure, DevOps practices, and automation in a collaborative, learning-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health and performance of production systems using internal dashboards and monitoring tools.
  • Automate routine operational tasks using scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) techniques.
  • Collaborate with SREs and software engineers to enhance system reliability and streamline deployment workflows.
  • Create and maintain internal documentation including runbooks and standard operational procedures.
  • Assist in the testing and validation of system updates, configuration changes, and deployments.
  • Apply best practices in observability, alerting, and service-level objectives (SLOs).
  • Perform basic troubleshooting for service outages, network issues, and system anomalies.
  • Contribute to team meetings and take ownership of mini-projects under mentor guidance.
  • Document technical workflows clearly and maintain project-specific knowledge bases.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Understanding of Linux/Unix operating systems and basic command-line usage.
  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals such as DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP.
  • Basic understanding of monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or ELK stack.
  • Awareness of software deployment lifecycles and DevOps workflows.
  • Foundational knowledge of programming, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Eagerness to learn new technologies and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language: Python, Go, Bash, or Shell.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing (AWS or GCP preferred).
  • Basic understanding of version control systems, especially Git.
  • Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, or other container technologies.
  • Exposure to IaC tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation and configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Collaborative mindset, especially in remote-friendly or distributed teams.
