About the Role

We’re seeking a passionate and data-driven Data Scientist to join our Risk Data Science team, where your work will directly influence fraud detection and risk mitigation strategies across the Uber platform. In this impactful role, you will collaborate with engineers, product managers, operations teams, and fellow data scientists to detect emerging fraud trends, develop prevention solutions, and drive business-critical decisions.

Your key focus will be reducing fraud losses, minimizing false positives, and boosting operational efficiency through statistical analysis, rule building, experimentation, and effective communication with cross-functional stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform statistical analysis and extract actionable insights to identify and understand fraudulent behaviors
  • Build and refine fraud detection models and rules to tackle evolving fraud patterns
  • Analyze large-scale datasets to develop proactive risk mitigation strategies
  • Conduct A/B testing and experiments to measure the effectiveness of implemented solutions
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of risk data, reporting structures, and KPIs
  • Work on collaborative, global projects with cross-functional teams such as product, engineering, community operations, and other data scientists
  • Present findings and recommendations to leadership for data-driven decision-making
  • Participate in regular knowledge-sharing sessions, team meetings, and training initiatives
  • Continuously learn and adapt to the fast-evolving fraud landscape at Uber

Basic Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience in a data-focused role (data science, analytics, business ops, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, or other quantitative disciplines
  • Strong foundation in SQL and Python for data analysis and modeling
  • Demonstrated ability to apply analytical/statistical methods to real-world business problems
  • Experience in data visualization tools like Tableau, Looker, Mixpanel, or Google Data Studio
  • Solid grasp of experimental design and statistical inference
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a talent for data storytelling
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and work independently in a dynamic environment
  • Proven experience in root cause analysis and business performance improvement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in risk, fraud, or payment systems is a strong plus
  • Hands-on experience with statistical modeling, A/B testing, or machine learning
  • Proficiency in R (in addition to Python) would be advantageous
  • Background in building rules engines or fraud scoring models.
